Meet Our Teachers

Knitting, Crochet, Spinning & Needle Felting

CarlaK

CarlaK's knitting skills are half self-taught and half taught-by-the-best knitter around. She has been teaching in the Pittsburgh area for 2 years and has built a loyal following.

Although CarlaK has been knitting for only 4 years, she has a long history in other needle arts. As far back as 1990 she was selling her original afghan patterns to Herschner's Corp., but knitting is what she was meant to do her whole life.

She currently offers a huge list classes, and has several more in the works for the future. Her high-energy, lots-of-fun, learn-more-than-you-thought-possible classes are something you don't want to miss.

Carol McFadden

Carol has a Studio Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh, has been spinning for over 30 years, and knitting for much longer. Her spinning guild has won several sheep-to-shawl competitions in the past, with Carol serving as spinner or weaver, and she has won blue ribbons for her spinning and knitting from Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, Michigan Fiber Festival, Washington County Fair and others. Carol has passed the second of three levels for the TKGA Master Knitter certificate and is currently working on the HGA Master Spinner certificate. She is completely addicted to color and fiber. She also makes feeble attempts to keep a husband and two sons supplied with sweaters and socks, does limited handspinning and design work as Feistywoman Designs, and spends every spare moment in her fiber studio.

Charissa Howe

Charissa Howe is an avid and self-taught knitter and crocheter from Pittsburgh's Northside. She has been designing and teaching for several years. Her favorite thing to knit is socks, and her favorite thing to crochet is afghans.

Charissa is married to a non-knitter (Tim) and has two daughters, Alexis (7- a knitter) and Gloria (1- a knitter in training), a teenaged foster son, Brandon (non-knitter), two cats (they don't knit either, but occasionally curl up in the knitting bag) and a wool licking dog.

When she's not crocheting, knitting, designing, teaching, changing diapers, driving the family around, cooking dinner, vacuuming up animal hair or picking chewed up crayon off the couch, Charissa is a decent seamstress, avid reader, slow hiker and a fair-weather rock climber and cyclist.

Steven Gailey

Steven has been knitting for 20 years. He learned to knit from an old man, a nine year old girl and an eight year old boy as an integral part of his Master Clown Training. He met his wife at the 9/11 disaster while he was knitting during a meal break. He was working on a 70 foot long scarf and she, a minister, offered to take him home. He took her up on her offer, and they were married 7 months later.

Since then he has knit long scarves, sweaters that several people can wear at once, and various other props for clowns. He is currently working on a book about knitting for charities. He founded and continues to run the Monday Knitting group on the South Side.

He has spent years teaching clowns to knit and looks forward to teaching the people of Pittsburgh.

Experience Level

Advanced Beginner

Materials

1 skein Universal Yarns Moods (197 yards) or any worsted weight yarn   (1 skein is plenty.  You could probably get 3 gauntlets out of one skein)   Color in sample is 1501

US size 8 knitting needles (circular or double points-your choice)

Stitch markers

Special Stitches Used

Twist Stitch

Holding your right needle still, bring the left needle forward under the edge of the fabric and back up to meet the right needle from the back of the work.  The CO edge and the rows you just knit will twist up between the needles and curl down beneath your needles again so you are ready to keep knitting.  When following rows have been knit, this edge will form wavy scallops.

Russian Bind Off

Knit (or purl-always work in pattern) the first two stitches together, then loosen that stitch up and place it back onto the left needle. Do the same thing again...knit (or purl) the loosened stitch which is now the first stitch on the left needle, together with the second stitch. Loosen it up and slip it back over to the left needle. Continue knitting (or purling 2 together and slipping the loosened stitch back to the left all the way across. Pull the end through the last stitch and cut yarn.

Make 1 Right

Insert left needle from back to front under the running thread between the stitch you just worked and the next stitch on left needle.  Knit into the FRONT loop of the running thread just lifted on to the left hand needle

Make 1 Left

Insert left needle from front to back under the running thread between the stitch you just worked and the next stitch on left needle.  Knit into the BACK loop of the running thread just lifted on to the left hand needle

Directions

Loosely CO 36 sts using long tail or other stretchy cast on.  Work 4 rows in stockenette stitch.

Next row:  k3, twist, *k6, twist; rep from * to last 3 stitches, twist, k3

Using either 2 circular needles or double points join into round being careful not to twist.

Rnd 0:  k2tog, knit around (35 sts)

Lace Ribbing

Row 1, 2, & 4:  *k5, p2; rpt from * around

Row 3:  *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, p2; rpt from * around

Repeat rows 1-4 of lace ribbing 5 more times (total of 6 times)

Maintaining lace ribbing pattern you will now add the thumb gusset.

Lace Ribbing With Thumb Gusset

Row 1:  k5, p1, pm, m1 right, m1 left, pm, p1 * k5, p2; rpt from * around

Note:  On following rows slip markers as you come to them

Row 2 & 4:  k5, p1, knit stitches between markers, p1, * k5, p2; rpt from * around

Row 3:  k5, p1, m1 right, knit to marker, m1 left, * k5, p2; rpt from * around

Repeat lace ribbing with thumb gusset rows 1-4 one more time (total of 2 times) then rows 1-3 once.

Ending Thumb Gusset Row:  k5, p1, remove marker, slip thumb stitches to holder or piece of scrap yarn, remove marker, p1, * k5, p2; rpt from * around

Work Lace Ribbing rows 1-4 three times.  Bind off loosely using Russian Bind Off (see above).  Using tail from cast on connect the ends of the twist row together.

Thumb

You will now pick up your stitches for your thumb.  You will use the 12 stitches you have on your holder plus you will pick up 4 stitches on the palm side of the thumb (gusset corner).  Use the directions below for whichever type needles you are using.

Double Points-Place 4 stitches on each of 3 needles, knit these stitches, pick up 4 stitches in gusset corner. This brings you back to beginning of round.

2 Circular Needles-place 8 stitches on first needle, place 4 stitches on second needle, join yarn at beginning of first needle and knit to gusset corner, pick up 4 stitches in gusset corner.  This brings you back to beginning of round.

Knit 5 rounds.  Bind off loosely using Russian Bind Off (see above).  Weave in ends and wear with pride!
